A managed backup service is only as good as who runs the restore

Self-service restore is why teams upgrade their managed backup service. The reason they stay is having an engineer who runs the restore when self-service can’t.

4 minutes

You don’t upgrade your backup because you wanted more storage. You upgrade the day you need one file back and realize you can’t get it without opening a ticket and waiting on someone.

Being able to grab that file yourself is why you’ll switch. Who you switch to matters more on the day the problem is bigger than one file.

Two ways to get a file back

You deleted the wrong folder, or overwrote a file, or you need last week’s version of something that’s changed five times since. There are two ways to handle it. Open a dashboard, find the file, and pull it back yourself in a couple of minutes. Or open a ticket and let Nexcess do it for you. Either way, it’s not a project.

Self-service is the one people usually reach for, and it’s the thing people ask for most when they upgrade. Once you’ve thought “I could have done that myself” enough times, you go find a plan that lets you. But the ticket option is still there for anyone who’d rather hand it off, and it’s just as fast on our end. What’s changed isn’t that tickets went away. It’s that they’re no longer the only way to get a file back.

The day it’s bigger than a file

Then there’s the other kind of day, when the problem is bigger than a file. A server fails, or ransomware gets into the environment, or a database restores but won’t come back clean. You’re not grabbing one file from a menu anymore, you’re rebuilding a working system while everyone waits on you, and a self-service button doesn’t do much for you there.

For the bigger stuff there’s bare metal restore, standing up an entire server from a backup onto fresh hardware, operating system, applications and data and all. The day a box dies for good, that’s how you come back, and it’s not something you want to be teaching yourself mid-outage. That’s the kind of recovery our support teams run, not something we hand you a button for and wish you luck.

Nobody weighs this when they’re shopping on self-service alone. Plenty of teams try to run the hard restore themselves, pick the wrong recovery point, bring the environment back half-broken or reinfected, and lose more time than if they’d waited. Doing it yourself is fine for a deleted folder, but a full recovery under pressure is a different job.

When you’re with Nexcess, that’s the job we take on. An engineer who already knows your setup runs the restore, with you or for you, finds the right recovery point, rebuilds the environment, and makes sure what comes back is clean and running rather than half-there. You still get the dashboard for the everyday file grab, and a person for the day it’s bigger than that. That’s the difference between a managed backup service and a storage bucket with a restore button. When disaster strikes, software doesn’t answer the phone, we do.

What to look for

If your current managed backup service makes you open a ticket for routine restores, price that friction the next time it happens. Count from the moment you need the file to the moment you actually hold it, not from ticket-open to ticket-closed. That gap is usually wider than you’d guess.

Then ask the thing that self-service can’t answer for you. When it’s a serious kind of restore, who runs it, and do they know your environment? A dashboard you can use yourself, and an engineer who shows up when you can’t, is what keeps you covered.
