The difference between buying Nutanix and having it managed
Compare managed Nutanix vs running it yourself, including setup, migration, patching, monitoring, security, and ongoing infrastructure management.
—

Nutanix provides the software platform to run your cloud, but buying it, whether directly, from a reseller, or from a specialist provider, is only the start of the job, since owning cloud infrastructure and operating it day to day are two different pieces of work.
Under a managed arrangement somebody else is designing the environment, rebuilding the network, patching hypervisors, monitoring node health, support if something breaks, and maintaining security evidence for auditors. None of that is included when you buy the software, and it carries on for as long as your systems live there.
What running Nutanix cloud yourself involves
Running Nutanix cloud yourself means owning a specific list of technical tasks. Before anything goes live, someone on your team has to:
- Provision the Nutanix environment, sizing physical nodes, virtual networks, and storage containers against your application requirements.
- Configure the network path, setting up routing rules, virtual networks, and firewalls so traffic reaches your virtual machines cleanly and securely.
- Plan and execute the migration, copying data while keeping live systems running and managing the final switchover window.
- Establish the security and compliance baseline, turning on encryption, enforcing multi-factor authentication, and pulling reports for auditors.
- Revisit all of it as the environment expands, people leave, or configuration changes render old network diagrams obsolete.
Then, during daily operations, those same people:
- Monitor cluster health, node performance, and storage usage around the clock to prevent resource contention.
- Apply Nutanix software updates, hypervisor patches, and hardware firmware updates as security releases come out.
- Troubleshoot unexpected outages, node issues, or network drops in the middle of the night.
- Manage vendor support tickets directly with Nutanix or the hardware vendors, waiting in queues while your systems are impacted.
What a managed provider covers, and what stays yours
A managed provider of Nutanix takes the setup and daily management off your team, while your application layer stays with you.
| What a managed provider does | What you keep |
|---|---|
| Designing and provisioning the Nutanix cluster | Owning your business logic and code |
| Rebuilding and managing the network paths | Managing user accounts inside your application |
| Executing the migration and final cutover window | Deciding when to schedule application updates |
| Patching Nutanix software, hypervisors, and firmware | Testing custom application updates before deploying |
| 24/7 proactive node and environment monitoring | Managing third-party application software licenses |
| Generating HIPAA-ready and PCI-ready evidence reports | Maintaining your internal business compliance policies |
| Owning the vendor tickets with Nutanix and the hardware vendors | Holding your application passwords and encryption keys |
Somebody has to maintain your Nutanix environment
Somebody has to maintain your Nutanix environment as your software, team, and security requirements change. Without ongoing management, the environment falls behind on critical security updates, and accumulates configuration gaps that go unnoticed until an audit or outage occurs.
That ongoing work includes tracking cluster capacity, updating virtual networks, and keeping user permissions up-to-date. It’s important to review and update your environment whenever a major change is made to your applications, or at a minimum once a year.
You cannot buy a piece of software or platform license to do this for you. Nutanix delivers enterprise reliability, but somebody still has to sit down, design the cluster, apply the patches, and answer the phone when something breaks. Ask any cloud provider whether building, migrating, and actively operating the Nutanix environment is included in what you pay for.
When paying for Managed Nutanix is the right call
When paying for Managed Nutanix is the right call happens when the people who would plan for, migrate, patch, and monitor your Nutanix cluster either do not exist on your staff or have higher-value projects to focus on. Some businesses do not have a dedicated system administrator or platform engineer on staff. Other businesses want the peace of mind that comes with expert engineers actively managing the infrastructure around the clock.
