Offsite backup: the difference between a bad day and a business-ending one

Offsite backup is the copy that survives when ransomware or hardware takes out your server. Here’s the case for making it the core of your backup, not an add-on.

Nobody wants backups, but everybody wants restores. It’s the cleanest way to explain why offsite backup keeps sliding down the priority list until the day something goes wrong.

When it does, it’s usually ransomware. It encrypts everything it can reach, including any backup sitting on the same server. The copy that saves you is the one it couldn’t touch, somewhere else entirely.

When nothing hurts yet

Most people don’t upgrade their backup because nothing hurts yet. It’s running, so they leave it alone. The catch is that backup only proves its worth after something breaks, when it’s too late to fix the gaps. Usually it gets left alone because nobody owns it, and that’s what Nexcess takes on.

What offsite protects against

People who’ve been through an incident swear by it. They learned the expensive way that a backup on the same box as the data isn’t a backup, it’s a second copy of the same single point of failure. Ransomware encrypts both without noticing the difference.

Bare metal restore is where it gets real. You spin up a whole new box from the offsite copy after a hardware failure or an attack. That’s the scenario that makes technical buyers take offsite seriously, because it comes for every piece of physical hardware eventually.

In practice that offsite copy can live in a couple of places. It can sit off your server but still inside our network, or fully offsite in the Acronis cloud, further from whatever took your primary down. Which one you want depends on how far you need the copy to sit from the original, and we help you pick rather than leaving you on whatever default came with the plan.

The strongest version is a copy the compromised server can’t reach, change, or delete. When ransomware hits, that copy is the difference between restoring and starting over.

The honest question for your setup

If your primary server vanished right now, ransomware, hardware, fire, take your pick, would your backup vanish with it? If the answer is yes, or you honestly don’t know, then you don’t have a backup plan, you have a second copy sitting in the same line of fire as the original.

Offsite is table stakes, but a copy sitting somewhere else doesn’t restore itself. Someone has to know it’s there, confirm it’s clean, and bring it back online while the clock is running. That’s the last mile of the 3-2-1 model, the part that’s easy to skip in the pitch even though it’s most of the value.
